Akshaya Tritiya Daan
Akshaya Tritiya daan brings infinite and imperishable (akshaya) spiritual merit. Akshaya Tritiya, also called Akha Teej, is a sacred spring festival in Hinduism and Jainism, celebrated on the third lunar day (Tritiya) of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of Vaishakha.

In 2027 it falls on Sunday, 9 May. The most auspicious gifts are Anna Daan (food), Gau Seva (cow care), Jal Daan (water), and meals for sadhus, elderly mothers and children.
Most of us know Akshaya Tritiya as the day to buy gold. Ask any grandmother, though, and she will tell you the real wealth of this day is what you give away, not what you bring home. Gold sits in a locker. A meal given to a hungry person, a pot of cool water offered in the May heat, a little sandalwood for the Lord: these are the gifts the scriptures call akshaya, imperishable.
What Is Akshaya Tritiya?
Akshaya Tritiya, also called Akha Teej, is a sacred Hindu and Jain festival on the third lunar day (Tritiya) of the bright half of Vaishakha. Akshaya means imperishable, so any daan, worship or good deed done on this day is believed to give results that never decrease.
The word itself explains the idea. Akshaya means imperishable, Tritiya is the third lunar day, and daan means giving. Put together, Akshaya Tritiya daan is "giving on the day when nothing given is ever lost".
When Is Akshaya Tritiya in 2027?

If you live in the USA, Canada or the UK, Akshaya Tritiya falls on Saturday 8 May by local time. Daan given at any time on the festival day carries the blessing, so don't worry if you miss the morning muhurat.
Why Is Akshaya Tritiya Daan So Special?
Daan on Akshaya Tritiya is special because its merit is said to be akshaya: it never decays or runs out. Most good deeds bring results that are eventually used up. Charity offered on this day, especially when it is offered to the Lord and His devotees, is said to keep giving.
The Bhagavad Gita (17.20) describes the purest kind of charity, sattvic daan: giving out of duty, at the right time and place, to a worthy person, expecting nothing in return. Akshaya Tritiya is the right time. A holy place like Kurukshetra is the right place. And service to Krishna, His temple and His devotees is the worthiest cause.
Srila Prabhupada taught that the real purpose of charity is to bring people closer to God. Feeding someone prasadam, food first offered to Krishna, nourishes the body and the soul together.
What Is the Significance of Akshaya Tritiya?
Akshaya Tritiya is an Abujh Muhurat: a day so auspicious that it needs no astrological time-checking. Weddings, griha pravesh, new ventures and, above all, charity can begin at any hour without consulting a priest. Several events from our scriptures and traditions are remembered on this day.
The Akshaya Patra of the Pandavas
During their forest exile, the Pandavas had to feed the many sages who travelled with them. Yudhishthira prayed to Surya Dev, who gave him the Akshaya Patra, a vessel that gave unlimited food each day until Draupadi had eaten.
One evening the sage Durvasa arrived with thousands of disciples, after Draupadi had already eaten. With nothing left, she called on Krishna. The Lord came, found a single grain of rice and a leaf of vegetable stuck to the vessel, and ate it. Because the Lord of the universe was satisfied, the sages felt full too, and left without a word of anger. The lesson for us is simple: even a small offering, given with love to Krishna, satisfies the whole world.
Sudama's Handful of Rice
Tradition holds that on Akshaya Tritiya, Krishna's poor childhood friend Sudama visited Him in Dwarka. Too shy to ask for anything, he brought only a handful of flattened rice (poha). Krishna ate it with great joy, and Sudama returned home to find his hut turned into a palace. What we give the Lord is never lost; He returns it many times over.
Chandan Yatra Begins
In ISKCON temples and in Jagannath Puri, Akshaya Tritiya begins Chandan Yatra, a 21-day festival in which the Deities are covered with cooling sandalwood paste to protect Them from the summer heat. Devotees offer sandalwood, flowers and cool water as personal seva.
Rath Yatra Preparations
In Puri, the building of the three Rath Yatra chariots formally starts on Akshaya Tritiya.
Other Traditions of the Day
Vyasa begins the Mahabharata: by one tradition, Srila Vyasadeva began dictating the Mahabharata to Lord Ganesha on this day.
Parashurama Jayanti: the appearance of Lord Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu, is celebrated on or around this date.
Ganga's descent: Mother Ganga is believed to have descended from heaven to earth on this day.
Annapurna and Kubera: tradition holds that Mother Annapurna, the goddess of food, appeared on this day, and that Kubera was made the treasurer of wealth.
The start of Treta Yuga: many traditions mark Akshaya Tritiya as the day Treta Yuga began.
Char Dham opens: the Yamunotri and Gangotri temples open for the summer pilgrimage on Akshaya Tritiya.
Regional customs: farmers in Odisha begin paddy sowing with the Akhi Muthi ritual, and at Simhachalam in Andhra Pradesh the Deity's sandalwood covering is removed for the yearly Nija Roopa Darshan.
Akshaya Tritiya in the Jain Tradition
Jains celebrate Akshaya Tritiya as the day the first Tirthankara, Lord Rishabhdev (Adinath), ended his year-long fast by drinking sugarcane juice (ikshu ras) poured into his cupped hands. Many Shvetambara Jains complete their Varshitap fast on this day, and offering sugarcane juice is a popular form of daan.
What to Donate on Akshaya Tritiya
The best things to donate on Akshaya Tritiya are food, water, grain, clothing and offerings for the Lord's service. Akshaya Tritiya falls at the peak of the Indian summer, so cooling gifts are especially valued.
What to donate | Why it matters |
Anna Daan (food / prasadam) | Feeding the hungry is called the highest daan, and prasadam feeds the soul too |
Gau Seva (cow care) | Cows are dear to Krishna; fodder and care for goshala cows earn great merit |
Jal Daan (water, earthen pots) | Cool water in the May heat is a blessing to people, animals and birds |
Grain (rice, wheat, dal) | Supports temple kitchens for weeks |
Meals and education for children | Nourishes the next generation in body and mind |
Chandan (sandalwood) | Used in Chandan Yatra to cool the Deities |
Clothes, umbrellas, footwear | Relief from the summer sun for those in need |
Sugarcane juice, sherbet, fruit | A Jain tradition and a cooling gift for pilgrims |
Bhagavad Gita (Gita Daan) | Knowledge is the gift that lasts the longest |
Who Should Receive Your Daan?
The Gita says charity should go to a worthy recipient. On Akshaya Tritiya, the most meritorious recipients are:
Sadhus and devotees who have dedicated their lives to God
Elderly mothers and ashram residents who have no one to care for them
Children from poor families, through daily meals and schooling
Cows in goshalas
Pilgrims and passers-by who need water and shade in the summer heat
The Lord Himself, through temple seva, which then reaches everyone as prasadam
You don't need to give much. As Sudama showed, a handful given with love is worth more than wealth given with pride.
