Langar Seva

Langar Seva is serving food to all visitors without caste, religion or status. People sit together, share food and treat each other equally. Langar Seva shows that everyone is equal and deserves respect.

What is Langar Seva?

"Langar" refers free community kitchen. "Seva" means selfless service. Langar Seva is about serving food to others with a pure heart.

Langar Seva is not charity as we usually know it. There are no givers and no receivers. All are equal in the langar. Today a cook could be a receiver and tomorrow he could be a cook. That is the beauty of it. A plate of food becomes a lesson in kindness.

History

The tradition of langar was started by Guru Nanak Dev Ji in the 15th century. He believed no one should go hungry. He also believed all people are equal in the eyes of God.

Later, Guru Amar Das Ji made langar a strong rule. Anyone who wished to meet him had to first eat in the langar, sitting with everyone else. Even kings followed this rule.

Today gurdwaras throughout the world run langars every single day. The langar at Sri Harmandir Sahib - the Golden Temple - in Amritsar is one of the largest free kitchens on earth - feeding tens of thousands every day.

The idea has now spread far beyond one faith. Temples, trusts and food charities across India run free kitchens in the same spirit.

Why Langar Seva Matters Today

Hunger exists today. Some families go without food. Some children go to school or go to bed hungry. Day laborers often cannot eat enough.

The practice of Langar Seva manifests in several very straightforward ways:

  • It feeds the hungry. A warm meal can change someone's whole day.

  • Breaks down barriers. All people young or old, rich or poor sit in same row.

  • Promotes community. Cooking, cleaning and serving all occur within the community.

  • It reduces food waste.  Foods are planned and used appropriately.

  • Spreads hope. People are seen and valued.

One meal may not seem like much, but a large impact can be created through thousands of individual meals.

How You Can Take Part in Langar Seva

You do not need to be rich to do seva. You only need a willing heart. Here are some simple ways to get involved:

  1. Sponsor a Langar Meal - Sponsor a daily, weekly or event meal. Your donation will go to fuel, vegetables, oil, dal, grains and food.

  2. Volunteer - You can volunteer in serving, cleaning, cooking or packing. A few hours goes a long way.

  3. Donate Food - You can donate vegetables, oil, dal, rice, flour or dry ration.

  4. Commemorate an Occasion through Seva - Whether it be a birthday, anniversary or memory use Seva to commemorate. These occasions can be converted into benefits for many.

  5. Encourage others to get involved - Share this page with a friend or family member. More people = more food

What Is Served in the Langar?

The food is pure, simple and sattvic. It is fully vegetarian and cooked without onion or garlic. A typical meal may include:

  • Dal and rice

  • Roti

  • Seasonal sabzi

  • Khichdi

  • Halwa or another sweet

Many people say prasadam tastes better than any restaurant food. The reason is simple. It is cooked with devotion, not for profit.

Enjoyment can also be seva - make your celebrations beneficial to someone else. Sponsorship of langar takes place on:
