About Srila Prabhupada

Srila Prabhupada The spiritual leader and the founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), also known as the Hare Krishna movement. He was born in Calcutta, India, in 1896 and was named Abhay Charan De. He received a traditional education in Sanskrit and Vedic literature.
In 1965, at the age of 69, Srila Prabhupada travelled to New York City to share his teachings of Krishna consciousness with the Western world. He arrived with just a few dollars in his pocket and a few books, but he was determined to spread his message. Despite facing numerous challenges and obstacles, he persevered and slowly built a following.
Srila Prabhupada's teachings emphasized the importance of devotional service to Lord Krishna and the chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra. His followers were encouraged to live a simple and austere lifestyle and to avoid materialistic pursuits. Today, ISKCON has thousands of members worldwide and continues to spread Srila Prabhupada's message of love and devotion.

Srila Prabhupada had a deep connection to the holy city of Kurukshetra and its significance in the Mahabharata. He envisioned a grand temple dedicated to Lord Krishna in Kurukshetra, which would serve as a center for spiritual education and devotion. In a letter to one of his disciples, he wrote:
"I am very much interested to construct a nice temple at Kurukshetra which will be unique in the world. I have got some conception in my mind and also I have discussed with some of my students here. They also fully agree with me. So if you are interested to cooperate with me in this attempt, then you can come here and live with me for some time."
Srila Prabhupada also had a vision for a Gita University in Kurukshetra, where students could study the Bhagavad Gita and other Vedic texts in depth. In a lecture given in 1976, he said:
"We want to establish a university in Kurukshetra, where this Bhagavad-gita will be taught. Not only Bhagavad-gita, but all Vedic literatures. The whole world can come and take advantage of this education. We want to establish a very big temple of Krishna and a university also. Thi s is our plan."
Srila Prabhupada's vision for a temple and university in Kurukshetra is still being pursued by his followers today, with plans underway to establish the Gita University and build a grand temple dedicated to Lord Krishna.
