Sacred Aja Ekadashi Vrat Katha (Story)

In the Brahmavaivarta Purana, the Aja Ekadashi katha is described in some detail. On being questioned by Yudhishthira about the significance of this particular Ekadashi, Krishna narrated a delightful story to him.

The Story of King Harishchandra

In the past, there was a king who ruled over the city of Ayodhya. His Name is Harishchandra. He was very truthful. He was known for always telling the truth, come what may. Sage Vishwamitra appeared one day to test his veracity for truth.

The sage asked the king to leave his kingdom, and the king gave it away without any kind of hesitation. Now, that the king had nothing, he had to pay the sage his fees by giving away his wife Taramati, and his son Rohitashva. A Dom worker bought the king, and Harishchandra went along with him into crematorium duties.

Such years went by in this harsh life. The king always thought how he could rid himself from all this mercifulness. A Sage by the name of Gautama arrived one day and saw the king in its state of sorrow. After informing him about the Aja Ekadashi mahatva, the wise sage requested that he observe the holy fast that was being observed.

And, with the advice of the sage, he observed Aja Ekadashi fast and that too faithfully. The whole day and night he fasted, as well as stayed awake taking the name of Lord Vishnu.

Then a snake bit his son Rohitashva, and his son died. Queen Taramati had no funds to cremate the body when he died. She even tore a piece of her sari to perform the last rites.

Heavenly music filled the sky and flowers rained down from heaven at that instant. Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva appeared with other gods. They were so impressed with the couple’s dedication, and pleasingly they revived their son.

Aja Ekadashi benefits came immediately, like a magic. The king got his kingdom back, and it has a happy ending; they were all reunited, and later eventually, they all went to heaven.
