What is the Disappearance Day of Sri Vasudeva Ghosh?

The Disappearance Day of Sri Vasudeva Ghosh is the day devotees remember Vasudeva Ghosh, a singer of kirtana and an eternal associate of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Nityananda Prabhu, who left this world. In 2026 it falls on Wednesday, 11 November.

Significance

Vasudeva Ghosh and his two brothers, Govinda and Madhava, were leaders of kirtana, the congregational singing of the holy names. Srila Prabhupada counts the three brothers among the branches of the Caitanya tree and explains that Madhava was so expert at kirtana that no one in this world could compete with him. Every year the brothers travelled to Jagannatha Puri for the Ratha-yatra festival, where they led one of the seven kirtana parties arranged by Lord Caitanya.

Srila Prabhupada writes in the Caitanya-caritamrta:

The three brothers Govinda, Mādhava and Vāsudeva were the eighty-second, eighty-third and eighty-fourth branches of the tree. Lord Caitanya and Nityānanda used to dance in their kīrtana performances.
