Significance
The Skanda Purana, one of the ancient Vedic histories, records Lord Brahma telling his son Narada Muni the glories of this Ekadashi. It is described as more purifying than bathing at places of pilgrimage, and it is the day Chaturmasya, the period of special vows, ends. The festival of Utthana-dvadasi follows on the next day, and it was kept by Lord Caitanya and His devotees:
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and His devotees participated in all the festivals, including Rāsa-yātrā, Dīpāvalī and Utthāna-dvādaśī.
Caitanya-caritamrita, Madhya 15.36
This year the day is also the disappearance day of Srila Gaura Kisora Dasa Babaji, and it is the first day of Bhisma Pancaka, the five days that run to the full moon.
How to observe it
On Utthana Ekadashi devotees take no grains or beans, and many spend the night awake singing the Lord's glories, which the Skanda Purana especially praises. The time saved from cooking and eating goes to chanting the holy names and hearing about Krishna. The fast is broken on Sunday, 22 November, between 6:53 AM and 10:23 AM at Kurukshetra.
