What is the Disappearance Day of Sri Murari Gupta?
In 2026 the disappearance day of Sri Murari Gupta falls on Monday, 26 October. It marks the day this physician of Navadvipa, an associate of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, entered the Lord's eternal pastimes. Sri Krsna Saradiya Rasayatra and Laksmi Puja are celebrated on the same day.
Significance
Murari Gupta is understood to be Hanuman, come again to help in Mahaprabhu's pastimes. His worshipable Lord was Sri Sita-Rama, and he had given his heart to Lord Ramacandra. So when Mahaprabhu once urged him to worship Krishna instead, Murari was deeply distressed. Mahaprabhu then smiled and told him that such single-minded devotion was just what a devotee should have.
Srila Prabhupada writes that Murari was a great devotee of Lord Ramacandra, and the Caitanya-caritamrta describes his staunch devotion. One verse there honours him in these words:
Murāri Gupta, the twenty-first branch of the tree of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, was a storehouse of love of Godhead. His great humility and meekness melted the heart of Lord Caitanya.
Caitanya-caritamrta, Adi-lila 10.49
