What is the Appearance Day of Sri Madhvacarya?
The Appearance Day of Sri Madhvacarya is the anniversary of the birth of the Vaishnava teacher who appeared near Udupi in South India. He is said to have appeared on Vijayadashami, and in 2026 that falls on Wednesday, 21 October, together with Ramacandra Vijayotsava.
Significance
Srila Prabhupada's line of teachers, the Gaudiya Vaishnava sampradaya, originates with the Madhvas. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His followers studied Madhvacarya's works before presenting their own philosophy, and Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura writes that Lord Caitanya asked all Gaudiyas to observe the nine teachings given through the guru-parampara by Madhvacarya.
The first of those teachings is that Lord Sri Krishna alone is the Supreme Absolute Truth. Others are that souls are by nature servants of the Lord, and that pure devotional service is the only way to liberation.
When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu travelled in South India, He went to Udupi, Madhvacarya's place:
Caitanya Mahāprabhu next arrived at Uḍupī, the place of Madhvācārya, where the philosophers known as Tattvavādīs resided. There He saw the Deity of Lord Kṛṣṇa and became mad with ecstasy.

How to observe it
Devotees read about Madhvacarya's life, remember his nine teachings, and offer respects to him as one of the acaryas in their disciplic succession. The day is also a good time to recall Lord Caitanya's ecstasy before the Deity at Udupi and to chant the holy names with the same hunger for Krishna.
