What is the disappearance day of Sri Bhugarbha Gosvami?

It is the day Sri Bhugarbha Gosvami left this world and entered the Lord's eternal pastimes in Vrindavana. In 2026 Vaishnavas remember him on Monday, 23 November, together with Sri Kasisvara Pandita. Gaudiya sources place it on Chaturdashi, the fourteenth lunar day, in Kartika.

Significance

Sri Bhugarbha Gosvami was a disciple of Sri Gadadhara Pandita, a close associate of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. His name means the one in the earth: bhu is earth and garbha is a hidden place. It is told that he did his bhajana, quiet worship, underground to avoid distractions.

The Gaudiya tradition knows him in Krishna's Vraja pastimes as Prema-manjari. Srila Prabhupada's translation of the Caitanya-caritamrita records:

The eleventh branch of Gadādhara Gosvāmī was Bhūgarbha Gosāñi, and the twelfth was Bhāgavata dāsa. Both of them went to Vṛndāvana and resided there for life.

Caitanya-caritamrita, Adi 12.82

How to observe it

Devotees remember Sri Bhugarbha Gosvami by reading about the early Gosvamis of Vrindavana and by chanting the holy names. A short prayer or a few extra rounds is a fitting offering.
